Fun Fall Family Activities

Sep 06, 2013 on Seasonal and Holiday

Fall is a great time to enjoy time as a family. The weather is cooling down, and you can get outside and enjoy the outdoors more than you normally could. You may want to make some plans for fall travel.  There are also a variety of weekend and weeknight activities that you may want to do with your family. You can choose from both indoor and outdoor activities.

Fun Fall Activities

Hiking and Enjoying the Leaves

One of the best activities you can do in the fall is to hike and enjoy the beautiful changing colors of the leaves. If hiking is not your thing as a family, you can simply drive to an area where you can enjoy a picnic and look at the beautiful changing leaves along the way. Most state parks will provide a place to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage.

Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Farms

A visit to the pumpkin farm to pick out pumpkins for Jack-o-lanterns is a good Saturday activity. Look for a pumpkin farm that caters to your child’s age. Many of the farms offer hayrides and carnival games in addition to just picking out a pumpkin. You may also want to visit a local corn maze or take advantage of one if they offer it on the pumpkin farm.

Haunted House

If your children are old enough, you may want to take them to a haunted house. Many haunted houses offer tours that are only appropriate for teenagers and adults. However, there may be some that will cater to a younger crowd in the early evening. Check with your city or nearby churches if you want a younger, kid-friendly version of a haunted house. Another option is to put on your own haunted house for the neighborhood. If you are doing your own, you may want to keep it pretty tame for the younger children can walk through it.

Plan a Night In

Another activity you can plan for a weekend with bad weather is to plan a night in. Plan a movie night with great kid movies, popcorn, and hot apple cider. You could also plan a game night or an indoor camping trip where you stay up late telling ghost stories and then camp in your family room.

Decorate for Fall

Another fun activity is to decorate your home and yard for fall. Kids love to draw and make a variety of Halloween and fall decorations, and you can spend a Saturday putting together a scarecrow for your front porch and carving pumpkins. You can save on your supplies with Target coupons. It is fun to have the scariest or friendliest yard on the block during October.

Visit an Amusement Park

Many amusement parks try to stretch out their season by offering great discounts on day passes to visitors. They may also offer night passes to a haunted amusement park with several different haunted houses you can visit throughout the park. The fall is a great time to visit because the parks are not as crowded as during the summer, and it is not as hot so the trip can be a lot more fun.

Go to the Movies

Fall is traditionally a time for some great blockbuster releases. Take your family to the movies one weekend. You can save by using Fandango coupons. In addition to enjoying the show, you may want to eat out as a family. This is a great activity if you want to include your teenager and he is reluctant about spending family time together.

Go to a Football Game Together

Another activity that you may enjoy doing is attending a football game together as a family. This does not need to be a professional or even college game if you cannot afford it. One option is to attend your local high school football game. This is a classics American past time and it is a lot more fun to attend the game in person rather than just watch it at home on the television screen. If you live near a college, you may want to purchase tickets to a game there and arrive early enough to take part in the tailgating parties and pregame activities. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, because you can get cold watching the games.
