8 Great Family Halloween Movies

Oct 09, 2013 on Halloween

Need some family Halloween movies that are fit for the kids to watch? There are plenty of good scary movies out there, but some may leave the kids with nightmares and unable to sleep at night. Choose carefully when choosing Halloween movies for young children. Here are eight Halloween movies for kids that the whole family will enjoy.

 1. Halloween with the Addams Family (1977)

If you can get your hands on a copy for this made for TV movie, then your family is in for a real treat. The Addams family members are spooky enough with their dark clothes and eerie ways. Who has a mom like Morticia? And what about the looming large butler, Lurch? And remember the cut-off hand called simply, “Thing”? Join these memorable characters for their annual Halloween party and all that goes along with it.

2. Casper (1995)

This is a non-animated version of Casper. A young girl isn’t too happy when she has to move with her father into a huge, spooky, old mansion—that is, until she meets, Casper, the friendly ghost. She also has run-ins with some not-so-friendly ghosts, including Casper’s uncles. Finally, she must work together with her father to rid the mansion of these invaders and help them move on to “the other side.”

 3. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

This is a great one to watch every year. From Charlie Brown’s ghost costume full of holes to Linus’s insistence that “the Great Pumpkin” will show up in the pumpkin patch, this animated classic is delightful. While the Peanuts gang goes trick-or-treating, Linus stays behind to wait in the pumpkin patch, where Sally agrees to wait with him. Lucy finds them asleep there in the morning when she goes looking for her little brother. Oh, well, Linus! There’s always next year!

 4. Hocus Pocus (1993)

Here’s another great Halloween movie with its child-chasing witches! 300 years before, three witches were executed for heinous acts against children. They could only come back to the town of Salem, Massachusetts, when a certain candle was lit. Well, when young Max lights it, the three witches return to wreak havoc on the town’s children. Max and his friends must fight them!

 5. The New Scooby Doo Mysteries (1984)

Scooby and Shaggy are always running into monsters and ghosts, and this series of TV episodes is packed with them. Little dog nephew Scrappy joins the gang in their adventures. These episodes are lot of fun for kids of any age—adults, too!

 6. Halloweentown (1998)

A great Halloween movie, as the action begins on Halloween day, when Grandma Aggie, who has witching powers, comes to visit. She says it’s time to teach one of her grandchildren witchcraft before her 13th birthday, which will be too late. The real reason for her visit, however, is to stop the evil happening in Halloweentown. When she leaves to go there, the children sneak out and go with her. Mom soon follows. The three kids concoct a plan to get the wizard Merlin’s magic wand to stop the evil.

7. The Little Vampire (2000)

This movie is cute and full of fun and adventure. A little boy, Tony, befriends a young vampire. They go on adventures in an effort to get rid of the vampire curse and turn young Rudolph’s family into humans. Both sets of parents are brought into the action. Will the young friends succeed? Watch this one to find out!

 8. Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! While this film isn’t a classic Halloween movie, it fits the holiday perfectly because of all the strange costumes, ghosts, and magic. When a new family moves into a house, the previous owners, now deceased, want the newcomers out. They hire a sort-of exorcist to try to get the “intruders” out of their house. This movie is strange and lots of fun to watch!
