10 Easy DIY Home Décor Projects

Mar 12, 2014 on Home improvement

Sprucing up your home with easy do-it-yourself home décor projects can be an inexpensive project that can be completed in one weekend or even in just a few hours. Stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot have many products for your DIY home décor projects, with online coupons to help keep costs low. Here are some DIY projects that are easy and inexpensive.

 1. Add Area Rugs

Yes, this DIY project is definitely simple but is enough to get you started in updating your home. Area rugs add warmth to hardware floors and color to any room. Rugs have a way of bringing the colors and décor of a room together into a cohesive pattern. With area rugs at an amazing $22.50 at RugSale, this upgrade is unbelievably affordable!

 2. Add Mirrors

Adding mirrors to walls is an excellent way to open up a room. Mirrors give the appearance of a larger space and add interest to a wall. Home Depot has a varied selection of plain and fancy mirrors starting at around $30. They have styles from cool deco to cherry cheval mirrors to dress up any room.

 3. Re-upholster Chairs

Reupholstering a chair gives you a whole new piece of furniture. HomeDecorators has a variety of fabrics from which to choose. If you’re not interested in taking on this project, make it even simpler by purchasing ready-made slip covers for chairs. Depending on the type of chair and material purchased, these covers can range from $19 to $300, which might be less inexpensive than upholstery fabric, which can cost around $30 per yard.

4. Redo Cabinets

One quick DIY kitchen or bathroom project is to switch out old cabinet or drawer pulls for new ones. Choose from a wide variety of pulls and knobs starting as cheap as $1, with most costing under $5 each. All you need is a screwdriver to change them out. Pick up a gallon of paint for about $30 to repaint cabinets, and you will have a totally new look.

5. Make Your Front Door Inviting

Sprucing up your front door is an easy DIY home décor project. Select the right kind of paint for doors. Add a nice welcome mat outside the door for $10, with a couple of potted plants gracing the steps or walkway. This easy project will cost about $75 with everything you need at Lowe’s.

6. Add an Accent Wall

Many homes have accent walls that catch the eye and make the room really pop! Consider the wall behind the bed’s headboard, the wall behind the couch, or a recessed wall somewhere in the house. Pick something darker than the color of the room—I see a lot of people use red—and slap it on that wall. What a difference you’ll see for just the cost for a can of paint (about $30) that can be found at any Home and Garden store.

 7. Update Lighting

Updating lighting is an easy DIY project to brighten up your home while changing your décor. Add lamps for the simplest fix, or install a fancy chandelier. Lowe’s has some gorgeous chandeliers starting at under $100 that come with instructions for wiring. Reviews claim it’s an easy job. Vanity fixtures in the bathroom are inexpensive and another way to upgrade and add decorative value.

 8. Replace Floor Tiles

Old tiling can be easily changed by replacing it with adhesive square tiles. Stick-on tiles are easy to install on smooth bases, such as concrete. These tiles can even be stuck on over existing linoleum. Now, that is easy! At Home Depot, 12 by 12 inch tiles start at only 99 cents per tile.

 9. Add Shelving

Adding shelving gives places to display pictures or coveted collections. Choose your shelving and location, and look around at Home Depot or Lowe’s to select your styles from plain to more decorative. Most wall-mounted sets include hardware and instructions.

10. Label Canisters and Other Storage

I saved this DIY home décor project for last because it is one of the easiest and coolest little projects I’ve found. Plus it’s free! Lowe’s has decorative labels for plain canisters and storage containers that you can download and print right at home. There are large ones for canisters and small ones for spice jars. This is quite a find, and a DIY home décor project I will be tackling soon!
